HE'S written "Tripper" on the inside of someone's lip, drawn dog paw prints on a woman's side and even tattooed a "sleeve" on his mum's arm.

Now tattoo artist Chris Hoye, along with business partner Shane Black, has opened Smik Tattoo on the Pacific Hwy at Woodburn, and is soon hoping to open another shop in Casino.

"When I was at school I did drawings with acrylics and oil paintings and won lots of competitions in Coffs Harbour, where I'm originally from," Mr Hoye said.

"I've been doing tattoos for the last five years now and it makes me feel good when I see someone really happy with the work I do for them."

Smik Tattoo opened its very bright and elegant studio on December 19 and is already a hit with some of the locals.

"I would like to get really involved with the community," Mr Hoye said.

"I am hoping to do charcoal drawings at the local markets and perhaps teach the younger generation the basics of drawing."

Mr Hoye said his "self-taught" foray into drawing and art started when he lived on a farm.

"My step-dad was a spray painter and he taught me some stuff," he said.

"I used to draw cows and rusty old tanks over and over again."

Smik Tattoo also does body piercing and is happy to look at any artwork you'd like turned into a tattoo.
