'Sweet little boy' lost in Morayfield drowning

A TODDLER who drowned in an inflatable pool in a suburban backyard has been remembered as a "sweet little boy" who was always upbeat and outgoing.

The tragedy has prompted warnings for parents to keep a vigilant watch over little ones, after a separate incident on the Gold Coast yesterday.

Alex Grove, 2, was pulled from the water at his Michael Ave home in Morayfield on Tuesday afternoon and revived by medics before he was rushed to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

Witnesses told The Courier-Mail family members and paramedics frantically tried to save Alex's life, but he died in the early hours of yesterday morning when his life support was shut off.

Tragic loss.

Family friend Ashlee Owen, who said she was affectionately known as "Aunty Ashlee", said she had lost her "little sidekick".

"He was my best friend," she said. "He wouldn't go anywhere without me. We were pretty much attached at the hip.

"If I went to the letterbox, he had to come with me. He was my little sidekick.

"I don't know what I will do without him now."

Paramedics responded to another near-drowning at Varsity Lakes yesterday, where a young girl was pulled from a pool. She was taken to Robina Hospital in a stable condition.

Senior operations supervisor Neil Stead said children would seek ways to beat the heat and it was more important than ever that parents be vigilant.

Ms Owen said family members were left traumatised after performing CPR on Alex to try to save his life. They were "not coping too well" and struggling to sleep after the tragedy.

Ms Owen said Alex's dad Kieren Pye died in 2015.

"Even though he didn't know his daddy very long he always told me how much he missed him," she said.

"He would always do cute little things like throwing his dummy up in the air to heaven and asking his daddy to catch it.

"He had pictures of his daddy around his home and used to always say 'goodnight daddy' before he went to sleep."

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has the following safety tips for inflatable pools deeper than 300mm:

● Ensure active adult supervision at all times.

● Keep children within arm's reach.

● Fencing laws apply to these pools so check requirements with your council.
