Rooney's return ensures FA Cup win for Manchester Utd

MANCHESTER United striker Wayne Rooney did not take long to announce he was back at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Rooney, who missed the previous five games through injury, scored after just nine minutes on his return in the 1-0 FA Cup third round replay win against West Ham.

The England hitman did not have it all his own way though - he missed a second-half penalty, his fifth miss from nine attempts from the spot this season.

The victory earned United a home tie with Fulham in the fourth round.

One goal also proved to be enough for Arsenal to progress, after Jack Wilshere's 86th minute strike ended Swansea's campaign at the Emirates.

The Gunners, who travel to Brighton in the next round, dominated the second half and could have won by more - Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Thomas Vermaelen all went close but were denied by Swansea keeper Michel Vorm.

In EPL action, Chelsea had to settle for a point at home against Southampton after squandering a 2-0 half-time lead.

Demba Ba and Eden Hazard scored for Chelsea before goals from substitute Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon stunned the hosts.
