Nuclear waste scare on highway
WORKERS who unearthed what is believed to be nuclear waste at a roadside site in NSW could be suffering from radiation poisoning.
The team was working on the Pacific Hwy upgrade near Port Macquarie on Wednesday when they were exposed to the material, which made them feel sick.
Some were treated for vomiting.
All workers at the site have been sent to hospital for examination.
The material is believed to have been left behind in 1980 when a truck carrying radioactive elements from Sydney's nuclear reactor to Brisbane crashed on the highway.
It is described as being grey clay which reflects orange streaks when exposed to air and light.
An exclusion zone has been set up around the site.
Health and safety officers and a team from the EPA are investigating.
