MP says independents must change

Local federal MP Luke Hartsuyker has called on independent MP's Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor to withdraw their support for the Labor government.

LOCAL federal MP Luke Hartsuyker has called on the independent member for Lyne Rob Oakeshott to withdraw his support for the Federal Labor Government.

Mr Hartsuyker said the Gillard Government had become a national embarrassment and only existed because of the ongoing support of Mr Oakeshott and fellow independent Tony Windsor.

"The events of the past week have confirmed that this is the worst government in our nation's history," Mr Hartsuyker said.

"They are in a shambles.

"The bitterness and division within Federal Labor has made the Government dysfunctional, yet Mr Oakeshott continues to prop them up.

"Mr Oakeshott must now put the interests of his constituents and the interests of the nation ahead of his own political interests.

"Federal Labor is hemorrhaging because they are too focussed on themselves and it appears Mr Oakeshott is making the same mistake.

"That can be fixed if he withdraws his support for the Government and allow an early Federal election.

"The uncertainty and instability surrounding this Government has spooked investors and crushed consumer confidence.  That is having a flow through effect in communities right across Australia. And now we are seeing it impact on international reputation."

Mr Hartsuyker said it was extraordinary that Mr Oakeshott maintained his support.

"The Independents claimed they supported Julia Gillard because they believed she could provide stability," he said.

"That has clearly been exposed as an error of judgement by both Mr Oakeshott and Mr Windsor.

"Whatever the result at Monday's ballot, the truth is that Federal Labor is deeply divided and only a fresh election will provide an opportunity to restore the trust and confidence that all Australians seek from their national government."
