Man killed, hit by train outside of Coffs Harbour

A MAN has been killed after being struck by a passenger train early this morning at Bonville.

Police said the Coffs Harbour man, aged in his late 40s early 50s, was hit by the XPT near the railway crossing on Bonville Station Rd around 1am.

It is understood the man was walking on the railway tracks at the time.

Police said the train driver tried to stop the train, but was unable to do so in time.

The passenger train was headed north at the time and was delayed as police cordoned off the track to investigate.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
