10.00am: POLICE have revealed Ulmarra man Kyle Watkins was the victim of a deadly Coffs Harbour assault on the weekend.

The 26-year-old's life support was switched off yesterday afternoon.

It is understood Mr Watkins was a plumber employed by the Clarence Valley Council.

The family has asked people to respect their privacy at this difficult time.

6.30am: A COWARDLY one-punch assault has again destroyed the lives of family and friends.

The life support for a 26-year-old man from Ulmarra was turned off at John Hunter Hospital at around midday yesterday after he was assaulted by an unknown offender in Coffs Harbour on Saturday night.

Detectives from Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command have formed Strike Force Gerda to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

They are appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward.

Police say the man had been visiting Coffs Harbour on Saturday for a party with a group of friends.

Later in the evening, the group attended the Plantation Hotel before proceeding to the Coffs Hotel.

Police believe the victim left the hotel with a group of people when he walked ahead of his mates on West High St at about 10.15pm.

A friend of the man was walking some distance behind him when he saw the altercation between his friend and the assailant where the victim was punched and fell to the pavement, causing severe injuries to his head.

The attacker was seen fleeing the area on foot down Lyster St.

Police have not been able to obtain a full description of the attacker at this stage.

Witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 or by using the online reporting page.

Information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
