Look out ciggie butt tossers you’re on notice!

The Rural Fire Service has set up a reporting system where the public can report people who toss cigarette butts.
The Rural Fire Service has set up a reporting system where the public can report people who toss cigarette butts.

IF YOU have ever been angered by the sight of someone flicking a lit cigarette butt out of a car then the Rural Fire Service now has a website and hotline for you.

The Report a Cigarette Butt Tosser campaign comes after the State Government in July doubled the fines for anyone caught flicking a lit cigarette during total fire bans in New South Wales.

The changes in July saw fines for the offence rise to $1320.

If you bear witness to this careless act, you can do your bit and report the offence via this website link.

The RFS website requires details on the location, date and time, vehicle description and registration plate.

Informants are required to give their contact details as anonymous reports are not accepted.

Alternatively you can call 1800 679 737 and leave a message and an officer will make contact.

Armed with the information, the RFS may issue an advisory letter or penalty notice to the vehicle's owner.

Where a disposed cigarette butt has caused a fire, this information may be provided to fire investigators and NSW Police Force for further investigation.

In these instances, penalty notices may be issued or court action commenced.
