Japanese children's day in Coffs

STAGED on the first Sunday of May each year, Japanese Festival of Children's Day has become one of the most colourful and popular events on the Coffs Coast Calendar.

The day celebrates the association of Coffs Harbour with sister city Sasebo in Japan.

Coffs Harbour City Council and the Friends of the Botanic Garden will be flying the traditional Koinobori carp flags, which symbolise perseverance and are a gift from the people of Sasebo.

Entertainment will include the dynamic Taiko Drummers performance group, Kizuna, games and storytelling, anime fashion, kite flying, bonsai displays and judging of the Ornamental Japanese Koi Carp.

Workshops for children and adults are on offer and include origami, calligraphy, manga masks design and kite making.

There is also a wide range of Japanese food available including sushi, Japanese BBQ, melonpan bread and more.

All children and their parents are invited to come along, bring a picnic and join in activities. Japanese Festival of Children's Day - Sunday 6 May 2012 - Gates open 10.00am at the Japanese Section of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden, Coffs Harbour.
