Hot start to summer brings a warning from paramedics

IT WON'T exactly be a heatwave but Coffs Harbour is set to welcome summer with some very warm conditions.

Early weather reports suggest this weekend will see two days of sunny weather with expected maximum temperatures of 33 degrees.

A broad low pressure trough is expected to stall over the Coffs Coast and other parts of northeast NSW on Saturday causing the warm conditions.

Northerly winds increasing up to 30kmh will help fan an increase in temperatures.

As temperatures soar into the 40s in western NSW today, paramedics from the Ambulance Service of NSW have asked for people to take care while out and about in the heat.

Some simple tips to remind people how to stay safe in the heat are:

  • Try to stay out of the direct sun - this is particularly important for the elderly and very young;
  • Drink plenty of water, and if outdoors for a long time, make sure you take a water bottle with you;
  • Remember to cover up and use sunscreen - "Slip, slop, slap and wrap";
  • Be sure to wear clothing that protects you from the sun;
  • Never leave children or pets shut in your car! Heat generated in a closed car can cause serious illness or even death, and;
  • Drinking alcohol causes dehydration and consumption should be minimised during extreme heat.

Paramedics said it's also important to be aware of possible symptoms of heat exhaustion.

These include nausea and vomiting, fainting and dizziness, loss of appetite, weakness, and/or headache.

If any of these symptoms occur, lay the person down, apply cool wet towels around the neck and under the arms and have them drink cool fluids.
