Golfing 'ace' Mavis may be an Australian record breaker

Mavis Baggott, 92, may yet turn out to be the oldest Australian to collect a coveted hole-in-one.
Mavis Baggott, 92, may yet turn out to be the oldest Australian to collect a coveted hole-in-one.

SAWTELL golfers are the most excited they've been in years after 92-year-old member Mavis Baggott picked up her first hole-in-one.

Mavis experienced every golfer's dream when she aced the par three seventh hole, using her 3-Wood to drive the ball 117 metres into the cup.

The next task will be to check if this is an Australian record.

Sawtell Golf Club publicist Fay Button said Mavis was playing with two friends who were astonished by the feat.

"They were so excited they forgot to play the hole out as second score was also needed," she said.

"Mavis was very happy by what she'd done but has been pretty shy and we had to even talk her into having a photograph taken to mark the occasion.

"We all dream of doing it - I'm still waiting like most of us - and it shows all good things come to those who wait."

Even more remarkable, Mavis has only recently returned to golf after recovering from a broken arm.

"She is a much loved, sprightly member of the Sawtell Golf Club and has been playing golf for 42 years," Button said.

"We all congratulate her on this wonderful achievement and I believe we'll be buying her a few drinks to celebrate."

They must be using special water on Coffs Coast greens because this is the second ace from a 'golden oldie' on a local golf course over the past 13 months.

In October 2011, Jessie Miller at the tender age of 90, landed a hole-in-one at Coffs Harbour after more than 72 years of trying.

The accepted world record was set in 2007 when Elsie McLean, 102, aced a par three hole in California.
