Flash mob has right moves

Celebrating World Autism Awareness Day, community members joined together to perform a dance flash mob at Coffs Central

Singers Andrew Davis and Liza Clark started the act before local dancer Christina Monneron, who choreographed the performance, burst onto the spontaneous stage followed by the rest of the flash mob.

Moonee Beach mum Liza Clark, the driving force behind the project, said the celebration promoted positive awareness of autism and helped create a more aware and inclusive community.

"I have a young son with autism and on my journey it has become a passion of mine to raise awareness ... but how could we reach people who are not autism aware?" she said.

"So I happened to stumble across, on YouTube, autism awareness flash mobs - an increasing trend in many parts of the world that hasn't yet been done in Coffs Harbour.

"We thought this would be a really good way of empowering those who are touched by autism to really feel like they are being actively involved in spreading awareness of autism."

Ms Clark said along with spreading positive awareness about autism the flash mob encouraged the community to embrace difference.

Mid Coast Communities Ability Links' Heather Woodrow said the program had proudly come on board to support the grassroots community initiative.

"The new New South Wales Government Ability Links program offers assistance to anyone aged nine to 64 who identifies as having a disability, their family and carers, helping them connect to their community, plan for their future, follow their passions and live the life they want to live," she said.

"At the same time, our linkers provide support to local communities to assist them to become more inclusive. "When Liza came to us with her idea, we were keen to get behind her and help make this exciting community aspiration a reality."
