THE New South Wales Deputy Premier has announced he will quit parliament at the next election.

Andrew Stoner said the "very difficult" decision was made for family reasons.

The Nationals leader told a media conference he spent 250 days away from home last year which "coincided with some very difficult family issues that have been faced pretty much by my wife and three children back at home".

"I'm not under any cloud. I have no job lined up. It's just time to put my family first," he said.

A ballot will be held on Thursday to find a new Deputy Premier and leader for the NSW Nationals.

Mr Stoner will maintain his portfolios until next year's March election.

The state lost former Premier Barry O'Farrell in April following his "memory fail" claim when accused of receiving a $3000 bottle of wine from the leader of a company embroiled in a corruption inquiry.
