THE Neil Allibone three fish challenge is on Saturday and Sunday, third time lucky.

It will be run concurrently with the monthly comp which is also a two-day event, with fishing times 5am Saturday to back in the harbour at 12.30pm Sunday.

Species are snapper, flathead, pearl perch, teraglin, mackerel all and samsonfish.

A good mix of species so all crews can get in the action.

There has been a few mackerel coming in over the past two weeks so the classier crews should be able to fire one in this weekend.

The water temperature is all over the shop with the highs of 27 degrees close to the light rolling back to 22 degrees during the week.

With the temperature change also came a water colour change, from deep blues and aquas with visibility allowing the bottom to be seen in 30 metres of water being replaced with green slimy-looking stuff allowing visibility of a few metres.

There is a fair chance the northerlies will swap to the south again this weekend so there should be an opportunity in the lull to get some fishing time in over the course of the two days.

Had a great chance to catch up with some visiting anglers over the holiday period.

There is no doubt some anglers go to extremes to visit and fish our waters.

One group had hauled their rig from Melbourne when they received word about the marlin numbers and another crew from Sydney spent a solid fortnight on the water most days chasing the same.

I can tell you these crews did not rough it on their visit and spent thousands of dollars in the town on fuel, food, tackle and accommodation.

Just imagine how many visitors we could attract with a state-of-the-art boat launching facility.

During the past week, even though the swell was minimal the surge was making life difficult even for experienced local boaters, I can only guess what the visiting boaters were thinking as they struggled to retrieve their pride and joy.

You may recall as a result of the forum on the boat ramp a working party consisting of one board member from the CHDSFC, a recreational angler, a senior council staff member and an elected councillor would be formed.

The first two positions have been filled, however progress will be made shortly in getting the working party working.

While there has not been a lot of visible action taken in upgrading the ramp there is some progress behind the scenes.

Last week John Collins, a senior member of our club, passed away.

John was an extremely active member of Coffs Harbour Deep Sea Fishing Club.

He served 25 years on the board of directors, the majority of which he was club president.

He was instrumental in securing the long term future of the club by negotiating the lease with the then Lands Department.

He was the driving force behind the modern development of the club including the original redevelopment of the club in the early 1990s.

John was a very active fisherman and his daughter Carol, son-in-law Ian and grandson Scott still fish from the JC boat.

It is through the efforts of members like John that the current members can now enjoy what is arguably the best fishing club on the east coast of Australia.

All members of the Deep Sea section pass their sympathies to Elaine, Carol and all members of the family.
