Car submerged in pond, but police find no sign of driver

POLICE are searching for a driver, who may have swum from a submerged car, after it crashed into a waterway in a residential Coffs Harbour street on Thursday night.

The vehicle careered into a pond, that's part of the Coffs Creek Tributary off Coriedale Dr, just after 6pm.

It is understood the vehicle came under police attention moments earlier in the Shephards Ln area.

A resident, who heard a car's brakes lock up in Coriedale Dr, and went outside to investigate said he dove into the icy water to make sure no one was inside the car.

Police were quickly on scene and witnesses told officers they heard someone running from the scene through bushes and dogs barking nearby.

Officers searched bushland as fire and hazmat crews remained on scene.

In a marathon retrieval, State Emergency Service crews provided lighting and cut down thick bush so the vehicle could be towed from the water.

A tow truck driver also braved the icy water to attach a winch to the vehicle.

By that stage only the car's roof was visible to the crowd of onlookers.

Inquiries continue into the incident.
