FORGET the Robin Hood image.

Or perhaps - because of it - archery was one of the sports that caught the imagination at the London Olympics and is now going through boom times across the globe.

Even on the Coffs Coast and Tablelands, where the Coast and Country Archery Shield has three archery clubs locked in battle.

Bellingen Target Archery, Coffs Coast 3D AAA and Armidale Archers have completed two rounds of a three-cornered contest which will be finally decided next month.

Bellingen club president Terry Gosschalk was himself a late starter in the sport and said it gets into your blood.

"The Olympics did wonders for archery and we're seeing a growth spurt," he said.

"It's an extraordinary thing to be able to go to a meeting and stand up beside somebody who is a champion and be able to compete as an equal."

Armidale and Bellingen members shoot at the traditional rounded circle targets while the Coffs Coast club based in Woolgoolga generally heads into the bush to hunt life-sized rubber animal figures.

"There is a special handicap scoring system for Coffs so that all clubs are competing on a level field," Gosschalk said.

Round one was at Woolgoolga with Connell Park in Bellingen the venue for round two.

Armidale lead the scoring from Bellingen and Coffs Coast as archers prepare for the grand final on the tablelands on Sunday, December 9.
