Anglers persevere despite heatwave and get some bites

THE heatwave conditions during the past week tried the stamina of many anglers, but large numbers still managed to get out on the water and bring in at least a feed.

As well as the heat, the reflection of the sunlight off the water resulted in a number of red faces.

However, the alternative was to fish late in the afternoon and into the evening, or start early in the morning before sun-up, a time when there were some good fish on the bite around the beaches and headlands.

Once again, bream in the estuary are still on the small side, with Rada Babic from Lightning Ridge, finding the best - 1.2 kg at Browns Rocks on a yabbie.

Two visitors from the Richmond area, Brian McInnes from Alstonville and Mathew Palmer from Meersham Vale, fished the Iluka Bluff with cunjevoi as bait.

Brian scored a bream of 742g, and Matthew one of 836g

In the river, Ben Pearce of Lawrence landed one of 834 on a mullet bait at Lawrence

Good size whiting are still on the bite, although a better class fish is taking the bait at night.

Twelve-year-old Cameron Apps from Forrest Lake in Queensland was very proud of his 305g catch taken on a yabbie at Sandon.

Bob Knight of Grafton caught one the same size, 305g while fishing at Minnie Water, but Cameron collects the certificate as his catch was made several days before that of Bob.

Most of the flathead catches have been made, as expected at this time of the year, closer to the entrance, with Matt Cahill of Grafton scoring the best -- 3.950kg taken on a lure in the Oyster Channel.

For the rock-hoppers, results from around the headlands have been encouraging.

Taigan Heath of Grafton scored a tailor of 2.2kg on a lure off Brooms Head, while Warren Troy of Yamba found a stray cobia of 7kg which took a herring bait off Spooky's Beach at Angourie.

John King of Iluka continued to chase blackfish at the Iluka Bluff and returned with a fish of 1.026kg

However, Greg Biffen of Yamba did a little better at a secret spot he described as "The Table'' and weighed in one of 1.1kg.

Greg used blackweed as bait, as most of the green weed in the drains in the cane fields has been burned off by the heat.

Mischa Porter of Iluka continued to chase jewfish and found a schoolie of 9.58kg at Shark Bay.

But Paul von Vratt of Lismore tried his luck on the Middle Wall and returned with one of 23kg, on a herring bait.

Conditions offshore have been more favourable, and Dale Collett and Michael Cowan of Iluka tried off Black Rock to the north.

Dale scored a snapper of 2.816 kg on a pilchard bait, while Michael returned with a morwong of 4.894 kg

Dale also scored a teraglin of 1.422 kg , while Terrence Ross of Grafton fished off Minnie Water for one of 1.665kg

Another good catch was the 7.5kg cobia caught by Mark Vallette of Yamba while fishing off Shark Bay

However the best snapper weighed in this week was the 6.18kg catch by Caleb Reynolds of South Grafton who fished off Minnie Water.
