BYRON BAY singer and multi-instrumentalist Andy Holm has reached the semi-finals of Australia's Got Talent 2012.

The 54-year-old was one of just 64 performers out of the 6000 who auditioned to make it through to the Melbourne semi-finals of the popular Channel 7 talent show.

Andy performed original compositions during his audition and his heat in front of the celebrity judges, playing seven different instruments, including keyboard, flute, didgeridoo, violin, vibraphone, guitar and percussion.

"You need at least two of the judges to send you through; all three judges sent me," he said.

Andy's dexterity on musical instruments is even more impressive given that it is a miracle that he is alive after a serious motorbike accident in 2000.

While living in Sydney he was hit by a car that ran a red light, leaving him with 12 broken bones.

He spent a year in a wheelchair and another year and a half on crutches.

He has screws and a rod holding his left leg together and lives with a lot of pain.

The accident sparked a move away from the city to the Northern Rivers in 2003.

"I became very vulnerable to (traffic) noise," he said.

"I knew that I had to get out of the city."

Andy said the secret to success on TV talent shows was to understand their format, not be afraid to stand out, and adopt a persona to ramp up the entertainment factor.

"You need to give them (TV producers) what they want.

"You can't be boring for 20 seconds or you are gone.

"I came in the Byron rainbow colours so I already stood out. My character is really the rainbow Byron Bay guy."

Andy, who performs regularly at local markets, said his TV success had been a community effort with at least 30 local people and businesses providing sponsorship.

He has sold 40,000 copies of his 14 albums and hopes the TV exposure opens opportunities.

The show begins on Channel 7 on Monday.
